There is so much emphasis placed on the condition/state of the heart in our faith.

Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is reported to have said, “In the body, there is a morsel of flesh, if it is sound, the whole body is sound. If it is corrupted, the whole body is corrupted. Indeed, it is the heart”.

In surat Ash-shu’ara, Allah SWT says, “The Day when neither wealth nor sons will avail, except him who brings to Allah a clean heart (qalbin saleem).”

There are dua’s we learn from the Quran and Prophetic narrations that put the emphasis, again on the heart. A few du’as are listed below.

“Our Lord! Let not our hearts deviate (from the truth) after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. Truly, You are the Bestower.”

اللَّهُمَّ مُصَرِّفَ الْقُلُوبِ صَرِّفْ قُلُوبَنَا عَلَى طَاعَتِكَ
“O Allah (swt), Turner of the hearts, Direct our hearts to Your obedience.” (Muslim)

يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِك
“O Allah (swt), O Changer of the hearts, keep my heart firm on the religion.” (Tirmidhi)

When we stand strong and do not give in to the whisperings of the Shaytan or the desires of our nafs, our heart remains protected from its negative effects. If we continue to protect our heart each time, inshaAllah we will be granted a sound heart i.e “qalbun Saleem” which is priceless.

The Quran says “And whatever strikes you of disaster – it is for what your hands have earned…”

What we see with our eyes, what we do with our hands, the steps we take towards the prohibited, the bad thoughts that we might have in our heads as a result of what we read, see (digitally or physically) – all these things have an effect on our heart. Our aim should be to develop a sound heart and do to so one must understand how our good and bad actions affect that heart. The heart is our castle that we need to protect to have a peaceful and purposeful life.

“Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”

What kind of heart do we have?

May Allah clear our heart of all vices in this month of Ramadan and grant us a sound heart.
