Ways of connecting between two surahs

The riwayah of Hafs ‘an ‘Aasim is the most common way of reciting the Quran in our time. In this riwayah, basmalah is always read between the two surahs (except Anfaal and At-Tawbah). There are other Qira’a that allow connecting between two consecutive surahs without basmalah. Example: The Qira’a of warsh ‘an Nafi’ allows connecting between surah without the basmalah with sakt and waslan (joining ayaat).

There are 4 ways of connecting one surah with the next surah in the Riwayah of Hafs ‘An ‘Aasim (except Surat Al Anfal and At-Tawbah). 3 of these are permitted and 1 is not permitted (We will discuss later why it is not permitted).

The first way – قَطٰعُ الجَميع

In this method, we can stop at the end of the last ayah of the surah (take a breath), then recite basmalah and stop (take a breath), and then recite the beginning ayah of the following surah.

Example of قَطٰعُ الجَميع (ending of Surah Al Humazah & beginning of Surah Al-Feel)

The second way – قطع الأول ووصل الثاني بالثالث

In this method, we stop at the end of the surah (take a breath), then recite basmalah and first ayah of the next surah in the same breath by connecting the two verses.

Example of قطع الأول ووصل الثاني بالثالث

The third way – وصل الجميع

In this method, we join the last ayah of the surah, basmalah, and the first ayah of the following surah in the same breath without stopping.

Example of وصل الجميع

The fourth way – وصل الاول بالثاني وقطع الثالث (not permissible)

In this impermissible way – the reader would end up joining the last ayah of the surah with the basmalah and then stop (take a breath) and then recite the first ayah of the following surah. This would lead the listener to feel that the basmalah is the ending ayah of the previous surah that was finished when we know that the basmalah is at the beginning of the surah. Hence this method is not allowed.

WAYS OF CONNECTING BETWEEN SURAT AL ANFAL AND SURAT AT-TAWBAH

This is a special case as Surat At-Tawbah does not have basmalah at the beginning of the surah.

There are three ways of connecting between these two surahs in all the 10 Qira-aat. All Qurra are in agreement on this.

First way – القطع

In this way, we recite the last ayah of surat Al-Anfal and then stop (take a breath) and then recite the first ayah of surat at-tawbah.

Second way – Sakt

In this way, we recite the last ayah of surat Al-Anfal and then observe sakt (breathless pause for two harakaat -سكتة لطيفة بدون تنفس بمقدار حركتين) then recite the first ayah of surat at-tawbah.

Third way – الوصل

In this way, we recite the last ayah of surat Al-Anfal and the first ayah of surat at-tawbah by joining them together (without breath)
