There are a few nouns in Arabic that begin with hamzatul wasl and do not have the laam at-ta’reef (al) in the beginning. During recitation, your teacher may test you by asking you to make a testing stop at one of these words and continue recitation starting with one of these words. When beginning with these words, the student should remember that the hamzatul wasl will get a kasra.
